A high pressure inside the eye normally causes glaucoma. It is due to a misdrainage or an overproduction of the liquid inside the eye. It can lead to a loss of vision and even irreversible blindness. This pathology can appear at any age, but it is more frequent after the age of 40. It can also be hereditary. Glaucoma attacks the optic nerve. The optic nerve is a type of cable that links the eye to the brain and it is sensitive to an increase of pressure of the eyeball. People who suffer from glaucoma do not necessarily have eye aches, but they can notice the following effects:
- Blurry vision
- Red eye
- Ocular aches around the eye
- Halos around lights
- Photophobia
- Mid-dilated pupil
- Vomitting
If you suffer from diabetes, if an eye was injured during an accident or if you take cortisone, you must be more careful. You can prevent and control glaucoma, but you can not cure it. It is very important to have you internal eyes pressure checked regularly by your optometrist.
